Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Expected Across Kerala; Red Alert Issued for Dams

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is bracing for heavy rainfall once again. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rain is expected to intensify over the next three hours in several districts, including Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. These areas may experience moderate rainfall along with strong winds reaching speeds of up to 30 km/h. In the remaining districts, there is a possibility of light rainfall and strong winds of similar intensity.

With the ongoing heavy rain, water levels in dams across the state are rising. As a precaution, a Red Alert has been issued for several reservoirs, including the Mattupetty, Kallarkutty, Irattyar, and Lower Periyar dams in Idukki. The water levels at these dams have reached critical levels, and controlled releases of water are taking place. Authorities have urged residents living near dam sites, riverbanks, and low-lying areas to remain alert.

In view of the heavy rainfall and potential disruptions, the district administration of Thrissur has declared a holiday for all educational institutions tomorrow, August 18. This includes professional colleges, as well as schools under the CBSE, ICSE, and Kerala State boards, along with Anganwadis, Madrasas, and tuition centers.

Residents in affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions and stay updated on weather warnings.
